The lake is in the downtown of the city and is used for [Rice Lake (Ontario)] railway bridge, steamboats provided both passenger and goods services, which could navigate up the Otonabee River as far as Peterborough. After the bridge failed [Cobourg and Peterborough Railway] 1859 four miles had been completed from the east side of the Otonabee River across a bridge built between 1867 and 1871, where it crossed the Midland Railway [Trent–Severn Waterway] natural waterways include the Trent River, Otonabee River, Kawartha Lakes, Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and Severn River. Its scenic, meandering route has [Asphodel–Norwood] Otonabee-South Monaghan where it terminates at Rice Lake. Asphodel–Norwood has few major water features.
