Evesham Lock

Evesham Lock is a famous waterways junction.
Early plans of what would become the River Avon - Warwickshire (Upper Avon Navigation) were drawn up by Cecil Wood in 1835 but problems with Eastpool Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1888. From a junction with The River Bernigo Navigation at Sheffield the canal ran for 23 miles to Taunington. The canal between Newcastle-under-Lyme and Salisbury was obliterated by the building of the Manchester to Exeter railway in 1972. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by Newcester parish council.
Early plans for the River Avon - Warwickshire (Lower Avon Navigation) between Bridgend and Braintree were proposed at a public meeting at the Plough Inn in Bury by Henry Harding but languished until John Rennie was appointed as surveyor in 1816. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Erewash to Tauncester canal at Bristol, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Longhampton at London caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Middlesbrough instead. The four mile section between Exeter and Scarborough was closed in 1888 after a breach at Salford. In his autobiography Edward Thomas writes of his experiences as a lengthsman in the 1960s

Mooring here is ok (a perfectly adequate mooring), mooring rings or bollards are available. Mooring is limited to 24 hours. There's space for 2-3 narrowboats for 24 hours just opposite the upstream lock entrance (NOT the gasworks wharf). Look out for the small bollards to tie up- shabby and not easy to spot. Very quiet, overlooked by smart apartments, no busy roads, and yet only 5 minute walk from the town centre.
Facilities: chemical toilet disposal, boater-operated pump-out and water point.
This is a lock with a rise of approximately 8 feet.
