![2009 : River Avon near Claverton, repairing the bank (1). The River Avon has been eroding its bank on the outside of this bend over many years, mostly in times of flooding. Remedial work has been necessary as it threatens to undermine a nearby railway embankment. Here the work is seen at an early stage using Mendip limestone, possibly from Merehead Quarry, to stabilise the bank and prevent further erosion. Large blocks are placed first followed by smaller, a process similar to that pioneered by John Macadam in road building but on a much larger scale and without the tar.See also: [[1472529]] and [[1472545]] by Maurice Pullin – 02 August 2009](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/47/25/1472520_477d0f62_120x120.jpg)
![2009 : River Avon near Claverton, repairing the bank (3). At this point the River Avon approaches the Bath to Bradford on Avon rail line on the outside of a bend in the river near Claverton. Over the years the river has eroded the bank, mostly in times of flooding, threatening to undercut the railway embankment. Remedial work is being carried out by contractors. This involves stabilising the bank with limestone quarried from the Mendips. A local train is seen on the line above emphasising the need for this work. HST's and heavy freight also use this line. Also see [[1472520]] and [[1472529]] by Maurice Pullin – 02 September 2009](https://s1.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/47/25/1472545_23626fc7_120x120.jpg)
