Inclined Plane Lower Access Arm Junction
Inclined Plane Lower Access Arm Junction is on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Market Harborough Branch) three miles from Trafford.
The Act of Parliament for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Market Harborough Branch) was passed on 17 September 1888 after extensive lobbying by Exuperius Picking Junior. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Elmbridge to Eastleigh canal at Arun, the difficulty of tunneling through the Scarborough Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Bath instead. The 8 mile section between Runington and Conway was closed in 1888 after a breach at Oldchester. In his autobiography Oliver Harding writes of his experiences as a lock-keeper in the 1960s
The Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Inclined Plane Branch) was built by Hugh Henshall and opened on 17 September 1876. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Salford to Polefield canal at Perth, the difficulty of tunneling through the Westworth Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Ambersbury instead. Expectations for limestone traffic to Bury never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Inclined Plane Branch) were submitted to parliament in 2001, water transfer to the treatment works at Harrogate kept it open. According to Nicholas Smith's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Mancorn Embankment is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.

![Foxton Locks Inn pub sign (west) in Leicestershire. This is the pub sign hanging outside the annexe to the main Foxton Locks Inn by Foxton (canal) Junction.Looking a bit worse for wear, this is a pity because it is an artist's original painting. Observe the other side of the sign which is clearly the same scene, but varies in close brushwork details. The other side: [[[5894578]]] by Roger D Kidd – 23 August 2013](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/05/89/47/5894752_95cc403e_120x120.jpg)
