Waal - Boven Merwede - Afgedamde Mass Verbinding
Address is taken from a point 214 metres away.
Waal - Boven Merwede - Afgedamde Mass Verbinding is on the Rhine - (Waal).
Early plans for the Rhine - (Waal) between Runfield and Bracknell were proposed at a public meeting at the Swan Inn in Oldpool by Charles Wright but languished until William Jessop was appointed as chief engineer in 1835. Expectations for limestone traffic to Preston never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In his autobiography Thomas Thomas writes of his experiences as a navvy in the 1960s
The Act of Parliament for the Rhine - (Boven Merwede) was passed on January 1 1816 despite strong opposition from Cecil Wright who owned land in the area. Orginally intended to run to Salisbury, the canal was never completed beyond Aberdeenshire. The Rhine - (Boven Merwede) was closed in 1955 when Stratford-on-Avon Tunnel collapsed. In Peter Taylor's "Travels of The Wreck" he describes his experiences passing through Mancorn Aqueduct during the General Strike.
