Swift Ditch Lock was the first pound lock on the Thames, providing
a much safer means of transit.
Previously, river levels were
maintained using paddle weirs which were opened and closed to allow
boats to pass through.
Downstream craft coasted through whilst
upstream craft were winched through. Originally, the main Thames
navigation was along Swift Ditch but this was abandoned in 1790 in
favour of the current course through Abingdon.
