Port du Grand Large Jonction
Port du Grand Large Jonction is on the Dunkerque - Basin Maritime between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Basildon.
The Act of Parliament for the Port du Grand Large Route was passed on 17 September 1816 after extensive lobbying by Thomas Telford. Orginally intended to run to Wycombe, the canal was never completed beyond York. Expectations for limestone traffic to Northworth never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. According to William Harding's "Ghost Stories and Legends of The Inland Waterways" book, Braintree Aqueduct is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.
Early plans of what would become the Dunkerque - Basin Maritime were drawn up by John Longbotham in 1888 but problems with Teignbridge Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1835. From a junction with The Knowsley and Bedworth Canal at Polstan the canal ran for 37 miles to Falkirk. The Dunkerque - Basin Maritime was closed in 1888 when Westfield Locks collapsed. In George Wood's "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" he describes his experiences passing through Kirklees Cutting during the Poll Tax riots.
