Dry Dock at Parbold Spur

The construction of the canal linking Liverpool to Leeds began in 1770 reaching Parbold in 1774. During construction, the route of the canal to Leeds was moved south taking advantage of the Leigh Cut through Wigan. This left, here at Parbold, a short section of the original route that intended to head north to Preston that had already be constructed at Parbold, redundant. Parbold Dry Dock was built in this redundant section.
