Star PH sign

This is the detail of a sign on the outside of the Star PH by the lock. Understanding the 'sense' of the sign - helpful or ironic - usually puzzles both passers-by and drinkers. Enquiries at the bar (2008 vintage) elicited the information that the sign was inherited from an earlier regime, and that there probably was a lifebelt conveniently located somewhere in the cellar.
