The pub on the lockside

A notice on the side of the pub explains that in the 14th century, the plague threatened to interfere with the Judicial system in Nottingham, so the assizes were moved to Ilkeston. This meant the erection nearby of a gallows for the execution of condemned criminals. The gallows fell into disrepair, and were blown down in a storm around 1870. The original pub, previously the Crown, took its name from this local landmark, by 1798. The present building dates from 1936.
