Boats heading for Llangollen can be very slow, against the flow of water and in the constricted channel width inside the tunnel. Boats headed for Hurleston therefore have to persuade those in Chirk Pool to allow them use of the tunnel. On this occasion one adopted the technique of waiting in the middle of the canal outside the tunnel mouth with tunnel light on, to give the impression of an oncoming boat inside the tunnel.
