The narrow locks at Watford and Foxton prevent there being a wide route between the northern and southern broad waterway networks (the tunnels and bridges on the Leicester section were built broad-gauge). At Watford the seven locks consists of a four lock staircase, with a two normal locks above and a single below. The staircase, like those at Foxton, has side ponds. If in doubt about operation, the lock keeper will advise.
