The adjacent Trewsbury Mead is the official source of the R. Thames (and the actual source in wet conditions as in this photo).

The sign says "Thames Barrier London 184 miles 294 km". At the time this photo was taken, there should have been continuous water all the way from here to the sea, and you can see it actually bubbling up out of the ground here.
