Hanbury Locks Side Pond

The flight is equipped with side ponds as a water conservation measure. This enables half of the lock full of water (for descending boats) to be emptied into the side pond and before the remainder is emptied into the canal pound below the lock as normal. Ascending boats will use the water in the side pond to half fill the lock before completely filling the lock from the pound above. In this way only half the amount of water is required for each operation of the locks.
