Kirk Ings and the site of Brewery Wharf viewed from Crown Point Bridge c.1950
The mid-twentieth century brought decline to the riverside. In the 1980's and 1990's energetic action by Leeds City Council and Leeds Development Corporation, encouraged by Leeds Civic Trust, EYE on the Aire and British Waterways brought regeneration. This riverside renaissance continues today at a remarkable pace. Opposite you, the hotel and the Design Innovation Centre (opened 1988) were created in refurbished buildings. The old coal wharf was replaced by Langton's Wharf flats (1991) and Turton's Provender Mill, built on the site of Crown Point Oil Mill in 1876, was converted to flats in 1987. On this bank the Aire and Calder Navigation Flyboat warehouses immediately to your left, erected in the 1820's were converted to Victoria Quays flats in 1987.
In 1992 Centenary Bridge was completed providing a vital pedestrian link to the south side of the river. This encouraged Joshua Tetleys to open its semi-circular Tetley's Brewery Wharf Visitor Centre in 1994 - the first leisure amenity to be built on the waterfront since the early Victorian period. Unfortunately the visitor centre closed in 2001.
