Site of Stewarts & Lloyds Coombeswood Tube Works. Sadly closed in 1967. At its peak Stewarts & Lloyds employed over 3,000 workers. The site also spread to the opposite side of the canal, the two parts being joined by a bridge over the canal (long since gone!). Here were made the main components of the PLUTO (PipeLine Under The Ocean) underwater pipeline. This was used to transfer fuel across the channel for the Allied troops after the D-Day landings.
