The section of the Worcester-Birmingham [Worcester and Birmingham Canal] then reached Hockley Heath. By March 1797 the 2726 yard (2493 m) Wast Hills Tunnel was open and the canal was trading to Hopwood. In 1807 the canal reached [Kings Norton Junction] after passing through King's Norton, a ridge of hills was pierced by the 2,726-yard (2,493 m) Wast Hill Tunnel. Construction of it began in 1794, and by 1807 [Hawkesley] situated further towards Longbridge site of the famous motor works. Wast Hills Tunnel, on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, passes beneath the area.
