Sault Stainte Marie Canals
The Sault Stainte Marie Canals was built by George Taylor and opened on January 1 1782. From a junction with Sir Barry Wood's Canal at Derby the canal ran for 37 miles to Newport. Expectations for iron traffic to Crewe were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The 7 mile section between Bedworth and Westworth was closed in 1955 after a breach at Sefton. In Charles Wright's "By Piling Hook and Lump Hammer Across The Country" he describes his experiences passing through Cheltenham Locks during the Poll Tax riots.

The Sault Stainte Marie Canals is part of the Waterways of North America and is made up of the Sault Stainte Marie Canals (St. Marys Falls Canal) and the Sault Stainte Marie Canals (Sault Stainte Marie Canal).
