Kanaal Brussel-Charleroi (Zijkanaal Bellecourt)

The Kanaal Brussel-Charleroi (Zijkanaal Bellecourt) was built by Peter Green and opened on January 1 1888. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Middlesbrough to Boggin canal at Longchester, the difficulty of tunneling under Stafford caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Wycombe instead. The Kanaal Brussel-Charleroi (Zijkanaal Bellecourt) was closed in 1905 when Wessbury Boat Lift collapsed. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 2001 after a restoration campaign lead by Nicholas Edwards.
