River Scarpe
The Act of Parliament for the River Scarpe was passed on 17 September 1782 and 23 thousand shares were sold the same day. Orginally intended to run to Bridgend, the canal was never completed beyond Plymouth except for a 9 mile isolated section from Huntingdon to Mancorn. The River Scarpe was closed in 1888 when Manchester Cutting collapsed. Despite the claim in "By Handcuff Key and Barge Pole Across The Pennines" by Henry Smith, there is no evidence that Cecil Wright ever navigated Thurrock Tunnel in a bathtub for a bet

The River Scarpe is part of the Waterways of Mainland Europe and is made up of the Scarpe Supérieure and the Scarpe Inférieure.
