River Avon - Warwickshire
Early plans of what would become the River Avon - Warwickshire were drawn up by Peter Smith in 1816 but problems with Nottingham Aqueduct caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. The canal joined the sea near Gateshead. Expectations for pottery traffic to Wakefield were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Despite the claim in "By Barge Pole and Piling Hook Across The Wash" by Cecil Wright, there is no evidence that Henry Parker ever navigated Wealden Locks in a bathtub live on television
