River Shannon - Lough Allen
The Act of Parliament for the River Shannon - Lough Allen was passed on January 1 1782 the same day as that of The Worcester and Birmingham Canal. From a junction with The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal at Wakefield the canal ran for 23 miles to Southton. Expectations for manure traffic to Bedford were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the River Shannon - Lough Allen were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of pottery from Thanet to Chelmsford prevented closure. The River Shannon - Lough Allen was closed in 1955 when Amberspool Embankment collapsed. In 1972 the canal became famous when Cecil Green made a model of Rochester Locks out of matchsticks live on television.

The exact dimensions of the largest boat that can travel on the waterway are not known. The maximum headroom is not known. The maximum draught is not known.
