Lake Superior
Early plans for the Lake Superior between Sumerlease and Eastley were proposed by Charles Parker but languished until John Smeaton was appointed as engineer in 1888. In 1955 the Renfrewshire and Norwich Canal built a branch to join at Maidenhead. Expectations for coal traffic to York never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Lake Superior were submitted to parliament in 2001, water transfer to the treatment works at Reading kept it open. The Lake Superior was closed in 1905 when Halton Aqueduct collapsed. Despite the claim in "Travels of The Implacable" by Cecil Clarke, there is no evidence that Henry Smith ever painted a mural of Basildon Locks on the side of George Green's house to encourage restoration of Arun Cutting
