The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is part of the Waterways of North America and is made up of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Stuart to Jacksonville), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Jacksonville to Savannah), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Savannah to Charleston), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Charleston to Wilmington), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Wilmington to Norfolk), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Norfolk to Back Creek), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Delaware River), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Chesapeake - Delaware Canal), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Manasquan River), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Cape May Canal), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Cape May to Atlantic City), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Atlantic City to Bay Head), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Point Pleasant Canal), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Manasquan Inlet to Sandy Hook), the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Sandy Hook to Hudson River) and the Dismal Swamp Canal Route.
Often referred to as "The Ditch", it consists of natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and sounds; other parts are man-made canals.

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, running from Boston, Massachusetts, southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas. Some sections of the waterway consist of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, and sounds, while others are artificial canals. It provides a navigable route along its length without many of the hazards of travel on the open sea.
